LOCATION

Serving key European markets

Steelmin is located in Jajce, in central Bosnia, 104 kilometres north west of Sarajevo and is well positioned to serve key European markets.

The smelter is situated close to high purity quartz deposits and abundant and economical hydro-generated power, both crucial factors for commercially successful ferrosilicon and silicon steels.

Steelmin benefits from a highly skilled local Bosnian workforce and team of technical managers, all of whom are experienced in ferroalloy production.

SILICON METAL

Steelmin produces metallurgical-grade and chemical grade silicon metal with a minimum of 98.5% Si content.

Silicon is most widely known for its use as a semiconductor in the electronics and computer industries and in photovoltaic solar cells. The rapid growth of the solar industry in the past decade has increased consumption of silicon metal for this purpose, a market which Steelmin is perfectly placed to supply.

Silicon is used as an alloying element in aluminium castings in the automotive industry. It is also a base material for a wide range of silicones used in the chemicals, medical and beauty sectors. For example, silicon is used in lubricants and adhesives, tubing and catheters, or skin care, cosmetics and hair styling products.

FERROSILICON

Steelmin produces ferrosilicon, a ferroalloy of iron and silicon, which contains 75% silicon and 25% iron.

Ferrosilicon is used extensively in molten crude steel as a de-oxidising agent and is also used to add electrical conductivity and corrosion-resistance properties to steel, improving the strength and quality of iron steel products.

The use of ferrosilicon in the manufacture of nodularisers and inoculants gives specific metallurgical properties to specialty steels, for example: stainless steel, for superior corrosion-resistance, wear-resistance and hygiene properties, and carbon steels, which are used extensively in the construction of suspension bridges.

MICROSILICA

Microsilica is the primary by-product of silicon and ferrosilicon production. It is used in the manufacture of high performance concrete for the construction industry, making it stronger, more durable and sustainable. In advanced refractories and ceramics, the addition of microsilica minimises the amount of water required in the casting process, giving increased strength and decreased porosity properties to products.
